The people of Rutland have spoken and they wish to see higher and increased development in their part of the city. In a written report to city council is was mentioned that 76% of people that attended the first public meeting held at Kelowna City Hall were in support of taller buildings. ;D

The second public meeting on this on the proposed changes to the OCP will be held at the main firehall on Enterprise way on Nov.30th at 7 pm

Having purchased a condo in the Asher Place development in downtown Rutland, I am estatic about the growth in the area. it is great for the entire city to develope rutland as it will draw more people and congestion away from the downtown area. A makeover is well over due to an area that hasn't seen major development in years and years.

As reported on the CKOV news page.

There's some new life coming for Rutland's uptown business core, with city council approval of a new 8-storey building at the corner of Highway-33 and Rutland Road.

City councilor Brian Given thinks the new building will provide a spark for more development in a key area of Rutland. The building will feature commercial space on its first four floors, with apartments on the upper floors.

The building, to be called the 'Four Way Centre', will sit on property once occupied by the Four Way food market, before it was torn down a number of years ago.

On Tuesday night, Kelowna City Council gave second level approval :D to the community plan and zoning bylaw to allow highrises in Rutland. Once the Transportation ministry gives the thumbs up then it is expected that City Council will approve the third level of the plan. This will be good news to everyone living in Rutland and it will only improve the economic situation and revitalization of the area.

Stay tune for more details and upcoming plans for the area. ;D

Today's Capital News paper has a very good read on the new development of high-rises. It's also very positive about the change.

Oh, and you might be hearing a new name for Rutland, "Uptown."

I think he meant that it would be called uptown just like Kelowna has a downtown. Not an official name.

And congrats on coming to UBCO! Welcome to our growing town. What made you decide to come to UBCO? What you taking?

Cheers...

Hey guys Ive just checked out this forum and this thread and think its wonderful that Rutland will start building upwards. Right now downtown Rutland is just dreadfuly boring there is no good architecture or places for pedestrians. As for all of those guests that complain that adding hi rises to Kelowna is gunna destroy this city, move out and live in a small town that doesn't progress. When that new bridge, which I assume all of you agree was a good choice for Kelowna, is built it will be the floodgate that brings even more people to this growing region.
