Oct 2, 2004 - Mike N.Jason R wrote in the No section: "We can prevent Kelowna from growing, and the results from the 2004 citizens survey do not lie." That's funny, I just read the 2004 Citizen Survey at www.city.kelowna.bc.ca and neither of the questions you quoted are even in it. Where did those numbers come from?

I gasped when I read someone's posting that the Fintry Queen is an "icon" in Kelowna!! How about an eyesore? Have you actually even been on it? With all due respect to whomever is the latest entreprenuer to try to make a go of it with the Fintry, the fact is it is an embarrassment.
I am so tired of the naysayers who apparently have nothing better to do than protest about this or that (John Z are you listening?). Get a life. And if you want Kelowna's dying downtown to stay that way, just move and let the rest of us enjoy the vibrancy of a growing community!

Hey Jason R., the Fintry Queen is a pile of [Editor: Please watch your language!]. Pardon my French. How can that be the icon of Kelowna? Is that thing bringing in the hundreds of thousands of tourists into Kelowna? No probably just a fraction. But this new development could become iconic in Kelowna.

Hey Jason, just because I expressed my dislike of the Fintry Queen means I'm a coward hiding behind the internet wall? Look I'm sure you've done so much great for this city, and by not letting developments like this come into town to revitalize the downtown. Yeah, instead of these projects all we will get is "Urban Sprawl".
And I have no regrets for using the langauge I did use.

John Z. Writes:
"they are afraid that Kelowna will become like a multitude of other big cities like Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, etc., cities that they left because they have become ugly urban jungles."
I'm convinced that your hysteria over big-city ugliness is rooted in the fact that you are from Edmonton, a place that lacked natural beauty before anyone even lived there.
Having lived in both Kelowna and Vancouver, I can assure you that both small and large cities can be beautiful. I can offer one example of "ugly" development in Vancouver -- the suburban houses on the north shore mountains. It's the same situation in Kelowna: ugly houses all over Knox mountain, Dilworth mountain, etc.
I find it a bit backwards that you are more concerned about development downtown -- a place that could not have been considered natural at any time during the past 80 years -- than development in the truly natural areas surrounding Kelowna.

"People aren't opposed to highrises because they are 'scared of the unknown' but because they are afraid that Kelowna will become like a multitude of other big cities like Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, etc., cities that they left because they have become ugly urban jungles." John Z.
If so many people are leaving, as you say, than why are all the cities having huge population increases? Maybe it's because some people like living in big cities. This big "exodus" is not happening.

Ha ha ha! Says you. That's rich.

Oct 24, 2004 - Lonnie F.I Think Michael P needs to re-read my original letter. I have no clue where you got this information and i think its quite funny that you are making it up as you go along. Did i mention anything about the 70's or that i was afraid to go outside because of pimps and drug dealers? I think you are confused...You also said that "He makes mention to "ugly high-rise, half-empty condos", he may not be able to afford one but there are lots of people who can and if this project goes through I don't expect it to stay "half-empty" for long after completion" I never said anything about high-rises or half empty condos? Where do you see that?? Also attempting to make fun of someones suspected financial situation by suggesting that i cannot afford a condo is simply immature and unintelligent. I dont know who's letter you were reading but it wasnt mine. I have only written ONE letter previous to this and i can copy and paste it in here for you to read. I suggest you check your facts before you make up your own. I dont really think this is a big deal, but i find it very ammusing. [my only previous letter unedited] Sep 11, 2004 - Lonnie I agree with everything Duane has said and Kelowna is in dire need of a facelift in the downtown core. I have been working downtown for 9 years and things need to change. Streets like Lawerence and Leon should be some of the nicest streets downtown yet they are the scummiest.. What a waste of prime property. Development is a good thing for any community. Kelowna is no longer the little town that the "older generation" wants it to be so why fight it. Kelowna is one of the hottest tourist spots in Western Canada (For all ages) so we need to act like it. Younger people that come to Kelowna spend as much money or more than those who come here only to golf and go on winery tours.. We need to cater to the younger generation also (age 25-40).. After all they are going to be the ones living here in the city and supporting it in the near future. There is no way that building taller buildings in downtown Kelowna is going to ruin anyone's view of the lake.. And even if it does slightly interfere then so what? Cities grow and Kelowna is booming.. Time to step into the 21st century here people. This isn't 1980 anymore as much as some people would like it to be.. [end of cutting] Can someone show me where i mention where i am afraid of pimps and drug dealers and also the other make believe tales of "half-empty" condos? Talk about "reading between the lines"!!

Oct 25, 2004 - Editor E.
Lonnie F. of Splashes (I believe). I believe Michael P was referring to another Lonnie of the no side:
"Sep 16, 2004 - Lonnie T. I can't believe anyone with an ounce of intelligence would believe that this asinine project will benefit Kelowna. It will drive away the very tourists the city council is supposed to be encouraging to come here. It will NOT eliminate the problem of the homeless and the street people. No long-term jobs will be created. Kelowna will simply become another ugly urban centre with nothing to attract people to visit let alone live here.
When I moved to Kelowna in the late seventies, I believed that this would be the place where I would live the rest of my life. It would be the place where I would be happy to retire one day and invite my family and friends from around the world to come visit. Now I know that I will never retire here. In fact, I'm looking for work elsewhere even through I am one of the few that have a decent, semi-well paying job. Why would I want to retire in someplace where I won't be able to see the beautiful mountains or the lovely lake for ugly high-rise, half-empty condos? Why would I want to live in a place where the streets are dark at noon and I'm afraid to go outside because of the homeless, druggies, and pimps wandering the dim alleys?
If you continue to support the destruction of our city and region, I hope you can live with the knowledge that you are supporting the death of a beautiful, irreplaceable thing. And I hope you know what you are going to tell your children in another ten or twenty years when they ask you what happened to the lake that will be too polluted to swim in, to the orchards that once made up the scenery, and why no one has a job that pays better than minimum wage.
Shame on you and all that support the uglification of Kelowna and the Okanagan."

Thanks Editor E..
No matter who it was directed at.. insults are not necessary here on this community website. This site was set up for a good cause. If anyone feels the need to reply to peoples letters and insult their suspected financial situations or anything else, then he should find another place to do it. Even if someone couldnt afford a condo, they still a member of this community and have a right to voice an opinion.. after all thats what this site if for! Lets keep the "bashing" and "smart ass comments" to a minimum.
regards, Lonnie F

Some questions Question for Mr. John Z
Do you feel that a citys expansion should consist of lower density developments? And when do you feel higher density should be implemented?
Do you yourself feel that sprawling cities are a sustainable form of development?
If you could answer these questions that would be great.
