This is the news release for the central Okanagan bypass:
Open House - Gordon/Clement/High Intersection -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- News Release -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As part of this year's construction program the City of Kelowna will be undertaking road improvements in the area of Gordon Drive, Clement Avenue and High Road. An Open House will be held on Thursday May 19th from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Okanagan Regional Library, 1380 Ellis Street, to present design drawings and illustrations of the project. Representatives from the City of Kelowna and the consultant will be on hand to answer questions.
The project will involve the re-alignment of High Road so that it connects with Clement Avenue at Gordon Drive. The T intersection that currently exists at Clement and Gordon will become a four way intersection. In addition, Clement Avenue between Ethel Street and Gordon Drive will be widened to four travel lanes; the new section of High, east of Gordon, will also be four travel lanes transitioning back to two lanes before Cerise Drive.
The project will also involve extensive railway re-alignment that will result in three new gated and signalized crossings.
These road improvements represent the first phase of the Central Okanagan Bypass (previously known as the North End Connector). Following the work this year, plans call for construction of the Central Okanagan Bypass to Spall Road in 2006. The section from Spall Road to Highway 33 will be completed within the next five to seven years, and the section from Highway 33 to McCurdy Road by 2020.
The project is scheduled to begin in June and continue through September.

I attended the open house this evening to see how the construction would work out. I was happy to see the intersection of Gordon and Clement being redesigned. But i was dissappointed to see that the 4 laning of the roadway would be starting at Ethel St. and not back at Richter St.
Phase two is not gonna be started until 2006 and will definitely ease the congestion of downtown traffic leaving the area after any major events. It will connect to Spall Rd.
The city expects to join the road to Hwy 33 within the next 10 years. I would strongly urge them to reconsider that and have that road join Hwy 33 as soon as possible. Any one that had been driving on Enterprize Rd in the past year since it was connected to Leathead knows that the traffic has increased by over 50% and with Wal-mart and the rest of the business at Central Park, the traffic will only increase more.

Road Closure on Byrns Road to Accommodate City's First Roundabout -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byrns Road, from Benvoulin Road to Guisachan Road, will be closed from May 30th to approximately July 15th to accommodate construction of the city's first roundabout at the newly-aligned intersection of Guisachan, Burtch and Byrns Roads. Byrns Road residents are encouraged to use Benvoulin Road as an alternative route; Byrns Road will remain accessible for local traffic from Benvoulin Road. The roundabout will help to address traffic issues that are arising with increased development in the area. An effective alternative to traffic lights or four-way stops, roundabouts are known for their impressive safety record. Modern roundabouts have been found to reduce the overall crash rate by 30 to 40% and reduce injury accidents by at least 50%. More information on traffic circulation through roundabouts will be provided to the public as construction proceeds.

Hey Duane have any thoughts for the new Bridge Aproach that was submitted to the City the Raised highway one? i cant remember the URL but was something like www.woodwardfriexpressway.comit stated that 2 lanes traveling east and two lane west raised above Hwy 97 at gordon to the new bridge it would have off ramps to major roads along the way also for emergency vehicles and a speed limit of 70-80 Km/hour 5 lanes is not enough to solve traffic problem the approaches have to be fixed too !

Benvoulin Road Corridor Construction -- It's Getting Busy Out There! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Thursday July 14th construction will move into high gear at the Benvoulin/KLO intersection. Traffic signals will be removed from operation and all motorists will be directed via traffic control personnel. Delays are to be expected. "The next few weeks are going to be extremely busy on Benvoulin, between KLO and Springfield, and motorists are strongly advised to use Gordon Drive as an alternate route," says Forrest Klotzbach, City of Kelowna Roadways Engineer.
In its continuing efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve the roadway network, the City of Kelowna has a number of major construction projects occurring this year in the Benvoulin Road corridor.
1. Benvoulin Realignment: Realignment of Benvoulin to connect with Dilworth at Springfield, along with improvements to the Dilworth/Springfield intersection to improve safety and reduce congestion. Anticipated completion: mid-September.
2. Byrns/Burtch Roundabout: Construction of the City's first modern traffic roundabout. Anticipated opening: July 26.
3. KLO Road Widening: Widening of KLO between Gordon and Benvoulin with safety and capacity improvements to the KLO/Benvoulin intersection. Anticipated completion: November.
While every effort will be made to minimize the traffic impact motorists should expect delays. Patience and understanding are appreciated during this busy construction season.
