Call Centre Clears Hurdle At Monday's regular City Council meeting, Council approved the rezoning of a property on Leckie Place, a part of the old Western Star truck plant. The property was rezoned from heavy industrial to business industrial to allow for a call centre for a financial services company. The call centre could create as many as 400 jobs.
In its approval Council cited minimal modifications to outside of building that would impact its neighbours. Council also waived a public hearing on the matter.
Meanwhile, Council is seeking an independent evaluation on a 1920's home in 400 block Cadder Avenue home before it decides whether or not the owner can tear it down and built a new heritage style home. The home is not on the City's heritage registry, but is in a heritage conservation area. Posted: March 01 / 6:53 am Story# 7434 / Staff

Rezoning For Call Centre City council will be looking at a rezoning application Monday afternoon that could create 400 jobs in Kelowna.
City staff have recommended the change for part of the old Western Star truck plant at the end of Leckie Place.
The Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission has been involved for about a year in talks with an American company to create the call centre.
If the zoning change is approved from heavy industrial to business industrial, Kelowna's McIntosh Properties will lease the building to a company that manages call centres. Posted: February 28 / 5:15 am Story# 7408 / RT

I am glad to see that Kelowna is allowing more call centres here instead of letting them set up shop in other communities. The creation of up to 400 more jobs here will help our economy, and give our young people a chance of finding work here instead of moving to larger cities. I do hope that this company pays it's employee's a fair wage instead of minimum wage.
