It has just been report by the Daily Courier that Kelowna is now the 10th busiest ( passenger in - out ) airport in Canada. The airport should hit the magic 1 million passengers this year which is WAY ahead of projections.
As a result, the airport will move up expansion and commence in a new expanded arrival area to be completed at the end of the year.
Being as an airport is one of the most important economic factors for a city - it is wonderful to see it flourishing. It is a real great facility.

YLW Now 10th Busiest Airport in Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's official. Recently published Transport Canada statistics confirm that Kelowna International Airport is the 10th busiest airport in the country, according to statistics from the first quarter of 2005. Of the top 10 Canadian airports Kelowna International was also the fastest growing, with passenger activity increasing 17.2% over the same quarter in 2004. TOP TEN AIRPORTS IN 2005 (The following data shows the top 10 airports in 2005 with their total passengers in the 1st quarter and the percentage change in 2005 from 2004) Toronto: 7,181,908 - 12.0% Vancouver: 3,725,498 - 7.6% Montreal: 2,675,608 - 7.8% Calgary: 2,377,263 - 13.7% Edmonton: 1,089,810 - 10.% Ottawa: 956,585 - 8.4% Winnipeg: 808,004 -10.% Halifax: 696,855 - 5.9% Victoria: 311,868 - 9.3% Kelowna: 275,843 - 17.2% Preliminary statistics for April indicate that strong growth continues in the second quarter; 74,718 passengers used the Kelowna air terminal during the month, up 18.75% over April 2004. Airport General Manager Roger Sellick attributes the double digit growth to a strong rebound in leisure travel since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the increased number of air carriers serving the local airport. Air Canada, Central Mountain Air, Horizon Air, Regional 1 and WestJet offer a combined 32 daily departures to 9 non-stop destinations including: Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Prince George, Red Deer, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria. On June 17th Northwestern Air is scheduled to begin a new non-stop service to Grande Prairie, Alberta. In mid-December Harmony Airlines will offer weekly non-stop service from Kelowna to Honolulu, Hawaii. Kelowna International Airport was previously ranked as the 11th busiest airport in Canada. ;D

Kelowna Airport is gonna get busier.
Air Canada announced yesterday that it will increasing the number of flights from Kelowna to Toronto. Starting on Feb 4th/06 we will now have one direct non-stop flight per day with Air Canada. Now take into effect that Westjet has been doing that since last Jan and you can see how popular the Kelowna Airport has become. I say we are definitely on our way to breaking a million passengers this year.

I've heard a rumor around the Aviaiton message boards like the ones you can find at www.Airlienrs.net that ZOOM airlines have been interested in flying into YLW. If anyone knows anyhting about ZOOM its that they fly Direct flights from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, TO, MTL over seas to London, paris, Glasgow and Manchester. So if ZOOM comes to Kelowna it must mean new International flights to the UK. Bringing in the only plane in ZOOM's fleet, the 767-300!! Hope this rumor is true, but like most rumors it may be just a pipe dream.

This was posted on CKOV today with the same story posted on castanet: The Kelowna International Airport is now the fastest growing major airport in the country. The Airport reached new traffic levels last year with 1 million 78 thousand 8 hundred passengers, marking a 21 percent increase over 2004's record breaking year. The fourth quarter of 2005 also set a new record at more than 283 thousand passengers. Airport General Manager Roger Sellick says the numbers are a sign of the strong economy in the Central Okanagan as well as the booming leisure travel market. The Airport also recorded its busiest month in the history of the airport with more than 105 thousand passengers in December, up 4 percent from a very busy August. www.ckov63.com/news.phpwww.castanet.net/edition/news-story-16241-1-.htm#16241

KELOWNA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HITS 1.2 MILLION PASSENGER MARK IN 2006 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jan. 11, 2007 News Release -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- December 2006 was the busiest month ever at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) with 120,400 passengers passing through the airport. This is an increase of 13.7% over December 2005 and is 8,000 passengers above the previous monthly high, which occurred in August of 2006. The total passenger count for 2006 was 1,226,442. In the past 24 months passenger traffic at YLW has increased by 37%. "This dramatic and unforeseen growth has placed an enormous strain on our facilities," says Roger Sellick, Airport General Manager. "The recently expanded terminal facilities have performed very well but have reached capacity a full five years ahead of forecast. While a number of areas are strained, anyone who was at the airport between 10:00 a.m. and noon any day in December would know that the lack of pre-board security screening capacity presented the biggest problem."
As part of the airport's 2007 capital development program funding has been set aside to expand the security screening area. The airport is also working with the Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority, the federal agency responsible for passenger security screening, to provide the necessary personnel and equipment to increase peak period processing capacity.
The City has allocated a total of $6 million dollars to undertake the necessary expansion to the terminal; project completion is expected by the end of the year. "We are committed to doing everything possible, under the contracting rules we are required to follow, to fast track this project and relieve congestion at the security check point as soon as possible," notes Sellick.
To address continued growth in the longer term airport management is also committed to bringing forward a comprehensive plan to expand YLW to meet the forecast passenger demand to 2015. That plan is be presented to City Council by the fall of this year. "We estimate the program will cost a minimum of $30 million and will be funded by Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) revenues," said Sellick. The airport levies an $8 per enplaned passenger AIF which is added to airline tickets.
Further information on the airport's master plan development program can be obtained from Sam Samaddar, Assistant General Manager, Airport Development at 250-765-5125.
