Well, a bit late in my quick report, but the sustainability forum was very interesting and actually quite good. About 100 people showed up at the Grand and the event was all afternoon. The format was excellent and the outcome was most likely very useful for Kelowna. A lot of great ideas came out of it. One thing I kept seeing and hearing was the desire for more serious application of the "town centers" idea [ the direction the city is currently going ] with a slow down of the incredible sprawl the city is seeing. It is good to see a consensus on this issue even if everyone’s definition of density is a little different. Also common was the desire to implement more water consumption controls and other environmental initiatives.
At one point Duane had the opportunity to hear from Mr. Zeger's right hand man who expressed his ideas for a more sustainable Kelowna. His points could be summarized as follows:
1) Stop growth ( population will double in 14 years) 2) Stabilize employment ( STOP recruiting companies to come to Kelowna and don’t let any expand ) 3) Developers recruit people to move to Kelowna and they have to stop it
His ideas are quite funny actually. The reaction of surrounding people was of amusement also. I wonder what political persuasion his ideology comes from ;D
Anyway, the forum was a success and we hope to see more of this type of citizen involvement in the future. Good going city hall!
