My Letter to the editor on July 12th:
"Lately I have been reading in the local newspapers nothing but negative letters about our beautiful city of Kelowna and the people that are on City Council. Are we all so drowning in negativity that we can’t see how lucky we have it here? Sure there are problems in our city, with some being more serious than others, but show me one major city centre that does not have its problems. We live in an incredible city that is progressing every day. We have lots of great and wonderful people moving to our city and I welcome them with open arms. Why would I, one who loves this city, want to be so selfish as to begrudge others to have the opportunity to move here and contribute to the fabric of our community? Why would I, one who believes in the future progress of this city, be so selfish as to complain when we need new residential or commercial housing (to be built in a sensitive and sustainable way) to accommodate our new neighbours and workers? Our City Council and Mayor have done a fantastic job over the past years in building an incredible city with an eye to the future generation. I say “thank-you” and I highly encourage others to do the same. Join me in telling everyone how much you enjoy seeing Kelowna progressing into the future by writing positive letters to this newspaper. Please do so now before we drown in the negativity that a small congregation of citizens seems to be placing on our fair city."

With absolute disgust I read a letter on Thursday in the Kelowna Daily Courier, by Rick Shea. Now I am fully supportive of people expressing their own opinions, but to state the Kelowna is being raped by developers shows an incredible amount of moral lacking to comparing development to the forced sexual assault to another human being. The man must look up to see a snake’s belly, and then he also lies by stating he is part of the limiting growth website. The CRCP is not a group that wants to limited growth but stop it all together, and they will try any lie convince that they are right. And to claim that John is trying to hoodwink or bully the community is his weak attempt to mislead the public again. But what can you expect from a closed minded person who refuses to look towards the future but dream about the past.
Kelowna is a beautiful city and they have the small minded idea that by developing it will destroy what is around us. We all know that is simply not the case. How do I know, because people want to move here! People want to make Kelowna their new home! People want to be part of a growing forward progressing community.

I think your hate is blinding your judgement Duane.

My judgement is just fine, and I don't have any hatred, but i strongly disagree with Shea using the term "rape" to discribe anything. That shows an extreme lack of intelligence on his part.

We will be building a home in Kelowna in the next year, and are so happy to be coming to your city.My wife and I find it very dissturbing to read all this negative press about the "price of progress".Certainly very careful infrastructure/social planning underpins the ongoing movement of growth, and I can understand the long term resident being fearful of the newites coming into the area. However,we can assure anyone out there who has reservations....we are coming to kelowna to "add/enhance" to the total community, and provide sustainable economic stimulus in our own small way....we would like to look foward to the builing of a better city lived in by caring residents who will add,and not subtract from its beaty and prosperity for all who come to Kelowna to live such a wonderful place. My time here has been about 60 years. Yes, Kelowna is a great little City. However leadership is an on going challenge, especially in a town that is exploding into a City. We need City Hall leadership. Open minded yet sensible. A case in point is the construction of the Bennett Bridge. The City leaders agitated for a new bridge for many years, finally getting a bridge but the Council, in it's wisdom, is unable to resolve the east approach (Harvey Avenue). Maybe 8 years ago, a valid suggestion by John Woodworth and Dennis Frie, professional and knowledgeable business men, was introduced to Council but never properly studied, eg. efficiently asking the vehicle drivers if this xpressway was a reasonable idea. I invite you to view www.xpressway97.com This is an idea used the world over to solve the extreme traffic problem such as we have and will continue to have on Harvey Avenue. We have too many stop lights on Harvey. This Concept has been suggested to both the Provincial and Federal Government representatives and awaits the Kelowna City Council request to properly establish the validity of a raised two-two lane viaduct for 1.8k's, finishing at Gordon Drive. The senior governments are willing to consider this Concept. When speaking with local citizens, a sense of "why not" is the thought of the majority. Please tell me what you think. BP
