I think we need to look at building a large scale convention centre to attract more conventions to Kelowna as a way to increase our tourist season. As it has been reported on the news lately, Pentiction is losing more and more flights into their city and this is starting to take a toll on the convention business there. Since Kelowna’s Airport is the 10th busiest in Canada, this would be the perfect time to become aggressive in bringing more conventions to Kelowna. Plus with the building of a very large convention centre we can bid on some of the largest conventions that occur not only in North America but throughout the world. Where would be the best place to build the convention centre? I would suggest the old Western Star Property. It is large enough to build a huge building with lots of parking. It is also very accessible from the highway and enterprise rd. With the building of the Central Okanagan Bypass on the north side of the area, this would provide easy access from three main routes. Plus with the hotels in the area, there would be plenty of rooms available for the conventions. Anyone have any other thoughts on this.
