Over the past few months we have heard all the complaining from the citizen from livable downtown and how they are trying to stop any future success of the downtown. Well to get their point across they are deliberately passing on wrong and false information to many of those who have signed that petition. I had the opportunity to listen in to a conversation and to have the person taking those signatures talk to me at around 1:30 Sunday afternoon June 8th. I was interested in what they were saying and I was interested in why there were only talking to people over the age of 45. This blond woman, who was gathering signatures at this time, was telling a couple of women how this development was being built over heritage buildings as the entire area were covered by them. She told the ladies that the entire development was going to be built by an out of town developer and that all the buildings were going to be 30 stories tall, all 13 of them.
When she came over to talk to us, I asked her what the petition was about, as I wanted to hear what she was telling them from the beginning. She gave the same brief description as before then added to us that she was a community nurse and highrises are not for children, these building were only going to be for the rich and nobody local would want to live in them. She then showed us a black and white picture of the original proposal and not the current one. She asked us if we were willing to sign. We then politely refused to sign the petition as I believe everyone has the right to their own opinion. She then started to push the fact that we need to sign this to get a referendum on the development even though we agreed with the development, again we politely refused and she stormed away. It was then that I realized that she was using one sheet to gather signatures so the person signing would not know what exactly what they were signing. Do these people realize they were signing one petition for two different causes?
We rode back an hour later and Mr. Zeger, leader of the group was working the sails and we watched him deliberately again ignore the younger crowd and young families and targeted older people. Since there were younger citizens around the sails during our time there, we did not see him talk to any of them.
Our main concern now is since Citizen for a livable downtown has been misrepresenting the facts to the people signing the petition. We now have to accept the fact the petition is invalid and everyone of those people have to recontacted to make sure they signed understanding all the true facts and not the ones made up by that so called community group. If you have signed the petition and feel it was a mistake or you felt bullied into signing, please contact the city and have your name removed or take the time to find out about the actual proposal, not the lies that were told to you at the signing. John Zeger quoted Joseph Goebbels in a previous letter by saying “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” It seems that he and his group have taken that to heart.
