As reported yesterday the ICON building has been cancelled but a new development proposal has been presented to the city planning department. It will be located at 1092 Ellis St, 1130 Ellis St,1089 Sunset Dr and it is reported to have 810 Units . We will try to get more details about this proposal.

Wow 810 units!! That is crazy big Awesome!! To be honest I was not that crazy for the Icon dev. The towers were ok but what they were gonna do between the towers was horrible.

Ok, so there were some more details on this in the Daily Courier dated June 21, 2006.
Basically, what is planned is one 26 storey buildings surronded by eight 4 storey buildings with a central mews.
I love the 26 storey building and HATE the eight 4 storey buildings. That would be a terrible mistake for the area, since the city wants to see more higher buildings in an already dense node. Plus where are the walkout townhomes that are very important component?? I can see city hall having similiar issues with this.
I would say 26, 22, 18, 16 with townhomes would be a better use of the land and look much better.
What does everyone think?

The 26 story builing looks really nice, and I agree with you about the 4 story buildings.. However I think any multiple residential units going downtown is a good thing. 810 units in that size of an area is still pretty good for downtown. It would be nice to see some office towers go up downtown too, doesn't have to be crazy big, something like 10-15 storey's but thats a different topic...

The 4 storey buildings would be kind of a waste of very valuable land, i agree. Townhomes are a great idea. I would love to see any development in that area incorporating commercial space on the lower floors of any highrise (say the first 4 or 5 floors) with residential above.

26 storeys? Wow. I agree with rethinking the plan to change the 4 storey buildings into taller... It just makes a whole lot more sense.
So how come all of you have seen the design? Where can I see it?

We have not seen the design yet - there was an article in the Daily Courier last week. A lot of people share the same thoughts about the 4 storey buildings.

There was a rendering of a building in Burnaby that they are building. It will be based on that.
